PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This course provides students with comprehensive, hands on training in the fiberglass repair and gelcoat application techniques used throughout the marine industry. Designed to give learners the skills and confidence to perform professional-grade surface work, this 2-day program covers everything from foundational fiber glassing to final gelcoat spraying, polishing, and waxing. No prior marine or trade experience is required this course is specifically crafted to be accessible to beginners entering the industry for the first time.

Masterclass in Fiberglass Repair & Gel Coat Application

Day 1: Safety, Materials Science, & Structural Repair:

Master Boat Repair: Hands-On Training for Fiberglass Cracks & Structural Damage Learn step-by-step techniques to professionally repair minor stress cracks and overhaul major fiberglass damage.

09:00 – 12:00 | Session 1: Foundations, Prep, & Beveling

(1) Safety & PPE: Respirator selection, nitrile/butyl glove standards, and workspace ventilation.

Materials Science: polyester, and epoxy resins; MEKP catalyst ratios; selecting glass reinforcements (chopped strand mat vs. woven roving).

(2) Surface Prep & Beveling: Identifying damage types (scratches, dock rash, deep gouges). Step-by-step beveling techniques to prepare a sample project for structural repair.

13:00 – 17:00 | Session 2: Lamination, Core Repair, & Air Void Radius Work

(3) Lamination & Core Repair: Resin mixing, core replacement , and structural glass layups.

Void & Hole Repair: Air void radius repair, fill-and-spray applications, screw hole filling, and patch paste techniques.

(Includes a 15-minute coffee break)

12:00 – 13:00 | Lunch Break

Day 2: Gel Coat Application, Curing, & High-Gloss Finishing:

09:00 – 12:00 | Session 3: Surface Inspection & Gel Coat Spraying

(1) Inspection & Prep: Pre-application inspection of Day 1 structural repairs; surface cleaning, fairing, and sanding for optimal gel coat adhesion.

(2) Application Techniques: Equipment setup, viscosity adjustments, spray gun tuning vs.

Execution: Precision application of 3 consistent coats of gel coat.

13:00 – 17:00 | Session 4: Sanding, Buffing, & Final Quality Control

(3) Wet Sanding & Buffing: Progressive wet sanding sequences (grit progression from 400 to 2000+) and heavy-cut compound buffing.

Final Polish & Finishing: Micro-finishing pads, swirl removal, and high-gloss sealing.

Quality Inspection: Evaluating surface finish, color matching, structural integrity, and final sign-off.

Payment of full tuition is due with the completed and signed Registration Form and a copy of an Official Photo ID.
